LONG ISLAND (1010 WINS) -- Dr. Dave Delman has found a way to beat the high price at the pump with his DeLorean - - and it has nothing to do with the Flux Capacitor.
The higher-tech version of the car that became an 80s icon, thanks to the Back to the Future movies, barely makes a sound and gets 30 miles to a charge.
"Approximately 80 percent of Americans could use a car like that because they don't drive more than 30 miles in a day," Delman said.
An electric car uses rechargeable battery packs and electric motors instead of a gas-powered engine. It produces no exhaust fumes and minimal pollution.
General Motors' attempts at producing one was followed in 2007's “Who Killed the Electric Car?" The documentary is actually what inspired Delman to refit his DeLorean.
Dr. Delman lives in Jericho and has an office in Manhattan near Grand Central Terminal. Along with his medical degree he also holds a degree in electrical engineering. In other words, he's got a bit of "Doc" Emmit Brown in him. In the summer of 2002, an exercise device he invented made it into the Hammacher Schlemmer catalog.
Even though his electric DeLorean is heavier than the original version, Delman said the modified one performs better, and he knows first hand because he owns the V-8 version too.
"I've gotten (the electric one) up over 85," he said.
Careful Doc, if you get it up to 88, you might see some serious..well, you know.
