1,094 Recruits from 49 Countries Join NYPD Academy

NEW YORK (AP)  -- A new class of more than 1,000 New York Police Department recruits has been sworn in. The second class of 2008 includes recruits born in 49 countries.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and police Commissioner Ray Kelly say the recruits next week will begin formal Police Academy training to become police officers in the 36,000-member department.

Bloomberg thanked the recruits Tuesday for risking their lives to protect his city's 8 million residents.

The 1,094 recruits are mostly male and mostly white or Hispanic. Their countries of birth include Albania, Barbados, Hungary, Jamaica, Peru, Trinidad and the United Kingdom.
