IRVINGTON, N.J. (AP) -- A young girl sitting on her porch with family members was wounded Sunday afternoon when shots rang out on a street in northern New Jersey.
The 10-year-old, whose name was not disclosed, was struck in the stomach by a stray bullet and taken to University Hospital in Newark, where she was undergoing surgery Sunday night. However, authorities said her wound was not considered life-threatening.
Witnesses said a passing car stopped near the girl's Irvington home just after 3 p.m. A man then got out and sprayed the area with gunfire before fleeing in the vehicle as neighbors and relatives rushed to the girl's aid.
It was not immediately clear what sparked the shooting or who the gunman's target was, but authorities described the girl as an innocent bystander.
