L.I. Boy, 6, Leaves School, Wanders onto Highway

LONG ISLAND (1010 WINS)  -- A 6-year-old Long Island boy took off on a frightening journey Monday morning.

Little Daniel Stevenson wandered out of Medford Elementary School and onto the service road near Sunrise Highway, channel 2 news reported.

Daniel, who was signed in late that morning, arrived at his classroom to find no one there.  Apparently, his class was off at an assembly, so the 6-year-old decided to walk home.

Luckily, two women saw Daniel on the side of the road crying and called police.  Officers made sure the boy got home to his mother, safe and sound.

But Jacqueline Stevenson is furious that nobody prevented him from exiting school grounds by himself.

She said that nobody even knew he was gone until she walked him back to the school.

"When I spoke to the principal, she said she would make sure that that never happened again, Jacqueline told channel 2. "(It was) a really poor oversight, a really poor oversight."

In the end, Mom is grateful that her son is okay, but, understandably, doesn't want to see this ever happen to anyone else again.
