Officials said they found 56 dogs, two squirrels and a parrot living under ``deplorable'' conditions at Irene Monroig's home on Wicks Road in East Northport.

But the 66-year-old woman's attorney said his client ``has a terrific reputation in her community'' and that she loved her animals.

The dogs lived in cramped, filthy conditions, with moldy food and feces, the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Roy Gross said.

Monroig was in First District Court in Central Islip Tuesday.
