NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- A PSE&G spokeswoman says power has been restored to most of the 250 customers who lost service after a transformer fire in Newark.
Three people were injured when an electrical transformer exploded in New Jersey's largest city shortly before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. They were walking over a sidewalk grate when smoke and flames rose up.
Newark Fire Chief Michael Lalor says the most seriously injured person, 56-year-old Marcel Holmes of Maplewood, was treated for first- and second-degree burns at Saint Barnabas Medical Center and released.
Public Service Electric & Gas spokeswoman Karen Johnson said most service was restored by 3 p.m. Many of the affected customers were large commercial and public buildings in downtown Newark, including the federal courthouse.
