NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A word to the wise burglar: Do not break into a retired New York City cop's home.
Police say a 25-year career criminal learned that one the hard way on Staten Island Friday afternoon.
At around 3:15 p.m., Richard Licione, 48, broke into the Lucile Avenue home of retired officer Carmine Longo, 46, according to police.
When Longo heard noise, he came downstairs and confronted Licione, police said.
Longo then chased Licione out of the house, and at some point, Licione got shot in the side. He drove off anyway and hit Longo with a minivan -- breaking his leg, police said.
While speeding away, Licione struck a parked car at the corner of Winant and Lucille avenues.
Police intercepted Licione on Richmond Avenue near the Korean War Veterans Parkway and chased him until he ditched his minivan and ran through a side path of Grape Vine Garden & Floral Co. at the corner of Richmond and Saxon avenues.
Licione had recently been paroled after spending 11 years in prison. He underwent emergency surgery after the shooting.
Longo was taken to Staten Island University Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.
Licione is being looked at for a possible connection to recent crimes committed in Brooklyn and within the confines of the North Shore's 120th Precinct, police said.
