Con Ed Worker Dies in Brooklyn Manhole Explosion

NEW YORK (AP)  -- A Consolidated Edison worker who died in a manhole explosion was engaged to be married next year.

Carol D'Auria reports.

George J. Dillman, 26, was killed in the blast in Brooklyn's East New York section on Thursday while he and another worker were splicing high-voltage cable about 10 feet underground.

The co-worker, 28-year-old Craig M. Penney, suffered minor injuries and was able to climb out of the manhole while Dillman was trapped there.

Penney was treated at a hospital and released, Con Edison spokesman Chris Olert said.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Dillman, a graduate of the St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens, had proposed to his girlfriend in June and they planned to be married next October.
