Dr. Brian McDonough on Diabetes

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- When people are diagnosed with diabetes, many initially feel defeated…as if they’re somehow flawed.

This is a natural reaction to being given a life-altering diagnosis, but the key point to understanding diabetes is that by using diet and medication if necessary to control the blood sugar, it can make a very real difference and dramatically cut down the long term risks of the condition.

A report in The New England Journal of Medicine echoes this sentiment. Aggressive treatment of diabetes, with good blood sugar control and drugs to reduce the excess heart risk that comes with diabetes, cuts patients’ death risk by about half.

Diabetes needs to be controlled and careful monitoring and measurement are crucial.
