First-Ever Progress Reports Issued on NYC Public Schools

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- The children weren't the ones getting report cards on Monday. For the first time, the city's schools were handed As, Bs, Cs, Ds and even Fs.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration released its progress reports for 1,224 schools in the nation's largest public school system as a way to make educators accountable and give parents a clearer picture of their children's education.

The grades "give us the information we need to make better decisions and the ability to set a standard for each school to meet over the next year and a method for holding our educators responsible for results,'' Bloomberg said.

Twenty-three percent of schools got As, 38 percent earned Bs, 25 percent earned Cs and 12 percent got Ds and Fs. A few schools' grades are under review.

Each school was graded on three categories: Student performance counted for 30 percent of the grade; student progress made up 55 percent; and the school environment, including factors such as attendance rates, figured in for 15 percent.

Bloomberg and schools Chancellor Joel Klein said if a school that has a history of excellence did not earn an A it is likely because it has not demonstrated significant progress; even if it does well, those achievements may have flatlined and would not be enough to earn an A.

Troubled schools earning Ds and Fs must submit plans for how they intend to improve and face being shut down or having personnel changes. Students have the option of transferring out of those schools.

Schools that achieved As could get additional funding.
