Dr. Brian McDonough on Dieting

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- There is no doubt that the amount of food we eat, as well as choices, that we make can affect numerous aspects of our overall health. One area of particular interest is how our diet affects our energy levels and sleep patterns.

The National Sleep Foundation evaluates food groups and how they interact with our systems. Here are some interesting findings that can make a difference in your day.

Carbohydrate-rich foods such as pastas and breads can make you sleepier. In particular, they work well with proteins to induce sleepiness, which makes combinations such as peanut butter on toast, cereal with milk, or cheese and crackers good bedtime snacks.

So a carbohydrate load might be helpful at times and a problem at others.

Most of us are aware that caffeine in foods and beverages is a stimulant that blocks hormones in the brain that makes you feel sleepy.

Alcohol is interesting. It can be relaxing and make you more tired, but it definitely has a negative impact on restful sleep.
