Emergency Landing at Long Island Airport

RONKONKOMA, N.Y. (AP)  -- A Southwest Airlines flight headed to Orlando had to make an unexpected stop at Macarthur Airport in Long Island.

Southwest spokesman Chris Mainz said a flight attendant reported an electrical smell after takeoff Sunday morning.

Flight 693 had left from Bradley International Airport in Connecticut at 7:21 a.m. Sunday bound for Orlando. The cockpit reported a problem shortly after. The plane landed safely at Macarthur Airport just before 8 a.m.

Airport spokeswoman Catherine Green said the 131 passengers and 5 crewmembers were all evacuated safely. They boarded another flight and continued to Florida shortly before 10 a.m.

Mainz said the plane was taken out of service and would be examined.
