Ex-NY Rep. Loses License for Refusing Alcohol Test

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (AP/1010 WINS)  -- Former Congressman John Sweeney had his driver's license suspended for 18 months for refusing to take a sobriety test when police pulled him over for speeding last April and smelled alcohol on his breath.

The suspension came after a closed hearing last week in front of an administrative law judge in Ballston Spa, Saratoga County.

A Department of Motor Vehicles spokesman says the ordinary suspension for refusing a sobriety test would be one year. But Sweeney's suspension is longer because of his 2007 DWI conviction.

Sweeney still faces trial for felony DWI for the April arrest.

The Republican lost his seat in 2006 to Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand , now a U.S. senator, amid allegations of spousal abuse.
