Governor Paterson, Wife Admit to Past Affairs

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)  -- A day after he was sworn in as New York's new governor when a sex scandal forced Eliot Spitzer to resign, Gov. David Paterson revealed Tuesday that he had affairs with several women, including a state employee.

What do you think about this revelation? Sound off below!

Paterson said the affairs happened during a rough patch in his marriage, and that the employee did not work for him. He insisted he did not advance her career, and that no campaign or state money was spent on the affairs.

"Several years ago, there were a number of women,'' Paterson said during a news conference called to address rumors and a newspaper account of one affair. "The public wants to know who its elected officials are and sometimes, even though you are human, and you are someone who just has feelings and has faults, there comes a time, perhaps when you have to tell the public.''

"I do not feel I have broken my commitment to the citizens of New York state,'' Paterson said as his wife, Michelle Paige Paterson, stood at his side, answering a few questions herself and smiling slightly when a reporter asked whether other politicians should come forward about their affairs.

Paterson, a Harlem Democrat, talked about one affair in an interview with the New York Daily News after he was sworn in Monday, but his comments Tuesday were the first showing the couple's fidelity problems went deeper than he first acknowledged. He is not having an affair now, he said.

The Patersons said they both had affairs during a time when their marriage was headed toward divorce. But they admitted the infidelity, sought counseling and have built a stronger marriage and family.

"We dealt with it as a family,'' his wife said. "A marriage has peaks and valleys ... no marriage is perfect.''

"I think we have a marriage like many Americans, maybe even like many of you,'' the governor told reporters. ``Elected officials are really just reflections of the people we represent.''

Paterson said the affairs took place since about 1999, and one extended into his term as Senate minority leader, which began in 2002. He said he didn't reveal the affairs during his time as a senator, Senate minority leader or lieutenant governor because no one had asked him and he came forward because he didn't want the rumors to cloud his governorship.

"I didn't want to be blackmailed,'' he said.

"Just as people were getting a good feeling and a feeling Paterson was a breath of fresh air, this happens,'' said Lee Miringoff of the Marist College poll. "I think he spent some of his political capital from Monday because it becomes part of the same story: Who is he?''

"This all becomes who he is,'' Miringoff said. "It obviously doesn't do him any good with a lot of voters, but it's not a knock-out punch ... it's not the Spitzer situation.''

Paterson, who is legally blind and the state's first black governor, ascended to office after Spitzer's resignation last week amid allegations he hired a high-priced prostitute from an escort service. Federal prosecutors are still deciding whether to pursue charges against Spitzer, a Democrat who was elected in 2006 with a historic share of the vote.

Assembly Democratic Speaker Sheldon Silver, a Democrat, said Tuesday he doesn't believe Paterson was weakened by the disclosure.

"This Albany press corps was in a feeding frenzy, looking for anything they could do to find it,'' Silver said. "And basically what David Paterson did was say, 'Stop bothering people. Here's the story. And that's it.'''

Republican Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, who is next in the line of succession to the governor's office should something happen to Paterson, said Paterson's personal life is Paterson's business only as long as it doesn't interfere with how he governs.

Asked if thinks Paterson's disclosure will be a one-day story, Bruno said: ``I hope so.''

Governor Paterson, Wife Admit Past Affairs
What do you think of David Paterson and his wife admitting to past affairs?
03/18/2008 2:57PM
Toning Down
I think they're just trying to tone down the accusations made against Spitzer. At least they knew about each other's escapades.
03/18/2008 3:03PM
ME ME
some couples get turned on by knowing their partner is with someone else.

Governor Paterson, Wife Admit to Past Affairs
Are you kidding me?!? This isn't news! This is tripe. This couple has not broken any laws and frankly, I am sick of hearing of politicians' sexual escapades. Let's focus on what is important: the economy, the low-value of the US dollar, and NY's upcoming budget. I am certain the new governor is focusing on those important issues. If I wanted to read trash, I would buy a tabloid paper.

Who Cares!
As the Bible says, Let he who is free of sin cast the first stone! How many can say they never did anything wrong in their marriage? The only important fact is how well he can run the State of New York.
03/18/2008 4:07PM
ENOUGH!
please - ENOUGH! who cares?? they aren't sex offenders, rapists, etc. leave them alone and let him run this state. obviously they are people of character if they went for counseling and fix the problem. the media is sounding like a bunch of catty teenage girls.

This should be the end of this subject
The Patersons are human. Let's move forward.
03/18/2008 5:18PM
good move
They are claiming their mistakes before someone else makes a circus out of it. This really shouldn't be any of the publics business but at least he's honest. Both he and his wife had problems and that should hopefully be the end of to HookerGate.

IT FIGURES
THEY ARE ALL THE SAME. THEY CHEAT, LIE & STEAL.
03/18/2008 6:11PM
Who cares 2
They are like a evryday normal couple with problems in their marriage. They admitted it and life goes on. Mr. Paterson is a breath of fresh air for NY
03/18/2008 6:55PM
POLITICS
GEE! WHAT A SUPRISE.THE TRUTH IS NOTHING BUT A LIE THAT HASN'T BEEN FOUND OUT YET.
03/18/2008 6:57PM
They are not religious figures
We tend to hold our public figures to the standard of, say, The Pope. Granted, they should be existing somewhat differently than us mere mortals but, at the end of the day, they just like us...mere mortals.
03/18/2008 8:26PM
State Budget is more important, Let's move on!
Who cares about what goes on in their personal lives. My concern is the economy
03/18/2008 8:27PM
New York City Interest
I too say "WHO CARES" how does his personal life effect the Budget Deficit, or the war in Iraq, or any other serious problem effecting the State of New York. This is so much a non-issue. The Press is reaching.
03/18/2008 8:46PM
Leave him alone
The affair is between Paterson and his wife. If we threw every politician who ever had an affair, there would be no ne left to run the country, state, county or village ! Give the guy a chance and let's put this to bed (so to speak).
03/18/2008 10:07PM
throw him out
He should have come forth with this earlier...I'm a Democrat but don't want him hurting the national ticket come this November
03/19/2008 12:14AM
our new governor
i think he's a refreshing addition to our state.seems like a real genuine person ther's something i like about him very much!thank God we got rid of that sex fiend.I just hope silda dumped him already!
03/19/2008 2:57AM
Different scene altogether!!
The Patersons' indescretions are normal as far as marriages go. Spitzer's situation involved high class hookers and taxpayers' money. Nuff said.
03/19/2008 4:04AM
Can we clone the Governor
Wish all politicians were so transparent. Just have one grudge against the Governor. "Where have you been all these years ? Finally feel proud to call someone a governor. Proud to be your constituent,

Albany
This is nothing new with our public figures, this has been going on for YEARS. Who cares it's not going to change..It's not fair if they use public money for there fun and we have to pay for it, that need to be changed they have money let them foot there own bill, but thats not going to happen. I worry about our deficit to take care of because we are the ones suffering as usual.. Old news..

Concerned Question
Maybe these married government people who cheat and are dishonest with each other are the same re the voting public?
