Huge Blocks Rain Down on L.I. Parkway Causing a Pileup

WANTAGH, N.Y. (AP)  -- Massive concrete blocks knocked loose from an overpass have rained down on the Southern State Parkway, causing nearly a dozen cars to pile up and snarling traffic for hours.

State police say there were no major injuries in Saturday's accident on the parkway in Wantagh.

Kathleen Maloney reports

Trooper Christopher Nolan says the outcome could have been worse.

He says some of the stones that fell from the Wantagh State Parkway overpass were estimated to weigh about 500 pounds.

Police say the debris was knocked loose from the overpass when a car struck the guardrail in an unrelated accident. Cars on Southern State Parkway swerved to avoid getting struck, and some collided.

Police say at least 10 cars were in the pileup.
