Fishing Boat Sinks Off LI, 100 Gallons of Fuel Spilled

OCEANSIDE (1010 WINS)  -- The Coast Guard says leaking diesel fuel from a sinking fishing boat has left an oily sheen a mile long off part of Long Island, but the boat's owners are cleaning it up.

The Coast Guard says the 70-foot clamming dredge sank at an Oceanside pier Saturday morning, spilling 100 gallons of diesel into the Hog Island Channel.

The agency says the boat's crew dove down 20 feet to try to plug the leak in the sunken vessel. The owners told the Coast Guard they took steps to keep the spill from spreading and have hired a clean-up crew.

It's not clear why the boat — called the Miss Edith — sank. No telephone number could be found for the vessel's owners.
