Former Councilman Miguel Martinez Pleads Guilty

NEW YORK (AP)  -- A former New York City councilman has pleaded guilty to mail fraud and money laundering.

Stan Brooks reports

Miguel Martinez admitted Thursday to skimming about $100,000 from funds meant for low income housing and arts programs in his district.

The federal government has suggested Martinez could be cooperating in a probe of the council's once-hidden "reserve funds'' practice. That involved stashing away millions of dollars for nonprofit groups and pet projects.

He could face more than 5 years in prison when he's sentenced on Oct. 21. He's free on $250,000 bond.

Martinez resigned Tuesday.

He represented parts of northern Manhattan. He was elected to the 51-member council in 2001.
