Dr. Brian McDonough on Fuctional Ovarian Cysts

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Many women have what are called Functional Ovarian Cysts and don’t even know it because they cause no symptoms and go away without treatment in one to two months or after one to two menstrual periods.

They can get quite big.

They grow as large as four inches in diameter before they shrink or rupture.

Now the term rupture, is a term that conjures up images of pain. Yes, when these cysts rupture, they can cause some temporary discomfort or pain.

Here is the key point…Functional Ovarian Cysts do not cause ovarian cancer. But when cysts are diagnosed, your doctor will probably rule out other possible types of ovarian cysts or growths before diagnosing a functional cyst.

This may involve a re-examination in 6 or 8 weeks, a pelvic ultrasound or possibly a laparoscopy procedure to closely examine the cyst and its ovary.

After menopause, ovarian cancer risk increases and doctors are very aggressive at evaluating and following up.
