NEW YORK (AP) -- Summer is officially about a month away. But New York City's parks commissioner has good news for people craving ``fun in the sun.''
Adrian Benepe says the beaches open for the season on Saturday. Swimming is allowed when lifeguards are on duty, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The National Weather Service predicts holiday-weekend sunshine, with temperatures in the 70s.
The city's beaches span a total of 14 miles, and attracted 14 million people last summer.
They include: Orchard Beach in the Bronx; Coney Island and Manhattan Beach in Brooklyn; Rockaway Beach in Queens; and Midland Beach, South Beach, and Wolfe's Pond Beach on Staten Island.
Benepe stresses the importance of safety, but adds: ``Have fun at the beach!''
