TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine made an unexpected visit to a Camden hospital Saturday morning so his doctor could check fluid leaking from the leg he broke in his near-fatal April car accident.
He was deemed fine and released without restrictions.
Corzine had surgery on the leg on Sept. 17 to remove excess bone growth. It was his fourth surgery on the leg broken in the April 12 Garden State Parkway crash.
Corzine spokeswoman Lilo Stainton said Corzine decided to visit the hospital after fluid began leaking from the surgical wound on his leg Friday night at his Hoboken apartment after a rigorous workout.
Corzine, according to Stainton, went to Cooper University Hospital, where he was treated for nearly three weeks after the accident and got the Sept. 17 surgery. The governor arrived around 9:15 a.m. to have his leg checked by his doctor, Robert Ostrum.
Stainton said Corzine spent 10 minutes with the doctor, who determined about a teaspoon of pussy fluid leaked from the governor's leg. She said the governor wasn't bleeding.
Stainton said the doctor said the leakage was common for patients who had the type of surgery Corzine had. The surgery involved a radiation treatment to prevent future bone growth and chiseling away excess bone. She said the doctor checked the leg and wrapped it and released the governor without restrictions.
She said Corzine suffered no pain or discomfort with the leakage.
``It was to reassure him more than anything else,'' Stainton said of Corzine's visit.
She said Corzine is still scheduled on Friday to have staples removed from his leg. Ostrum removed about two pounds of excess bone from the leg on Sept. 17, a condition common in people who suffer severe femur injuries.
Stainton said Corzine canceled a visit to Washington, D.C., Saturday morning for a congressional prayer breakfast, but made no other cancellations.
Corzine broke 15 bones in the April 12 crash, which occurred when his state trooper-driven sport utility vehicle slammed into a guardrail at high-speed after being clipped by a pickup truck. A state police investigation determined unauthorized use of emergency lights by Corzine's driver triggered the crash.
Corzine on Wednesday insisted his recovery isn't interfering with his work as governor.
