Gov. Paterson Resting Comfortably after Eye Surgery

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)  -- Gov. David Paterson is scheduled to have a second routine eye operation on Friday, two days after he was hospitalized for acute glaucoma.

The Democrat was recovering and resting comfortably at home Wednesday and conducted some state business. He is expected to return to a full schedule after Memorial Day.

Paterson was briefed on several issues by senior staff, signed 10 bills and vetoed one having to do with a rule involving civil law and credit judgments. He also spoke with Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, said Paterson spokesman Errol Cockfield.

The Democrat went to a Manhattan hospital Tuesday after suffering what physicians say was excruciating pain from acute glaucoma.

Paterson, who is legally blind, was diagnosed with acute glaucoma in his left eye and underwent an iridotomy. That's a routine outpatient laser procedure done to relieve pressure on that eye.

Friday's schedule procedure will protect his right eye from glaucoma, Cockfield said.

The procedures aren't expected to have any long-term effect on the 54-year-old governor's health.
