Hawks at Manhattan's Riverside Park May Have Died

NEW YORK (AP)  -- Bird experts believe three young red-tailed hawks born in recent weeks at a Manhattan park have died.

The body of one young hawk was recovered at Riverside Park on the west side. Two others have gone missing from their nest. Bird-watchers said they feared the eyas have died as well.

Dr. Leslie Day recovered the body of the nestling on Sunday. The naturalist said the cause of death remained unknown. A toxicology analysis was pending.

A red-tailed hawk called Pale Male attracted attention after residents of a Fifth Avenue high-rise had its nest removed in 2004. They said the hawk and his mate were health hazards. But an uproar ensued and the nest was restored.
