NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Powerful storms pounded the Big Apple last night knocking down dozens of very old and large trees in Central Park and forcing road and walkway closures.

Manhattan's Upper West Side suffered the heaviest damage as strong winds knocked down large trees on Central Park West -- causing delays on roads and sidewalks.

Trees in Central Park did not fair much better. Many downed trees were strewn across walkways -- including 86th Street -- forcing park officials to close sidewalks and drives throughout the park. There is extensive damage near the park's tennis courts at West 96th Street.

The National Weather Service estimates that wind gusts in that area were as high as 80 mph Tuesday night.

The storm swept in after two sweltering days of temperatures above 90 degrees.

No injuries were reported as a result of the storm and no significant power outages have been reported at this time.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a chance of another shower and thunderstorm Wednesday afternoon and into the evening.

A heat advisory remains in effect, with high temperatures in the lower 90s expected.
