NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- It should not be surprising. After all, our genes determine so much of how our body behaves. But a new report from the University of Miami has found that a person’s genetic make-up seems to influence how he or she reacts to certain hypertension medications.
This is a very important finding and it could have a huge impact on how we treat hypertension.
Here is what I mean. For a long time, we have chosen our blood pressure drugs based on age, sex, nationality and other factors because certain groups respond to certain treatments better. Only after trying the general choices do we start to individualize treatments based on how a person responds.
In the future, being able to match genes with medications could allow us to start with a more appropriate medication right from the start. This could save precious time and money.
