There are also reports of several accidents in Westchester and the Taconic Parkway at the Saw Mill River Parkway was closed due to icy roads.

The National Weather Service says freezing rain will spread across north Jersey before it changes to just rain as temperatures rise later Sunday.

In New Jersey, State Police shut down parts of Interstates 78, 80, 280 and 287 due to ice and accidents. Sgt. Stephen Jones says driving was too treacherous.

Sgt. Jones said that between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday the New Jersey State Police responded to 120 calls from motorists.

Wayne Police Lt. Wayne Lougheed says his department got "hammered.''

Lougheed says his department received calls for 37 accidents involving more than 90 vehicles, 7 ambulance requests, a house fire and a transformer fire between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  He says the department would get about 15 calls during that period on a typical Sunday.

Lougheed says there were three accidents all in the same area of Route 23 involving 17 vehicles.

State Police say there were numerous injuries, although officers are not sure of the severity.
