NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- You need to be more careful than ever when it comes to protecting your kids on the Internet.
That‘s the word from a new study in the journal Pediatrics.
According to the Growing Up with Media survey, researchers have found that victimization online is more likely to occur through instant messaging and in chat rooms. 1,600 children were in the study and 15% reported an unwanted sexual solicitation in that time, with about one-fourth of those occurring on a social networking site.
A third reported online harassment, with a quarter of the incidents occurring on a social networking site.
Here is the breakdown of the reported incidents: 43% via instant messaging, 32% in chat rooms.
Harassment was more common in instant messaging (55% of incidents), in case you’re wondering the experts suggest that parents should not totally cut off online activity but they should monitor it closely.
