NEW YORK (AP/1010 WINS) -- A man with a history of domestic violence was charged Thursday was fatally stabbing his mother-in-law and trying to kill his wife at a birthday party for his twin sons.
Harpal Hira had been barred by an order of protection from seeing his wife but was allowed to attend a party at their home in Syosset on Aug. 2, police said.
The party was for the twins, who were three months old, and the woman's mother, who was visiting from Kuwait and celebrating her 56th birthday
Detective Sgt. Anthony Repalone said the couple argued and Hira grabbed a butcher knife and attacked the women. His mother-in-law, Meena Kohli, was killed, and his wife, Ritika, suffered several stab wounds.
Hira, who was featured on "America's Most Wanted,'' fled to Florida, police said. While on the lam, he altered his appearance and was wearing a beard and turban when he was arrested in Queens on Wednesday, Repalone said.
He was arraigned on Thursday on charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder.
If convicted, Hira faces 25 years to life in prison.
Police said another man, Parmjit Puar (pictured left) has been arrested and charged with hindering prosecution, for allegedly helping Hira elude police.
