Dr. Brian McDonough on Latex Allergies

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Talk about irony…latex gloves were developed by Johns Hopkins surgeon William Halsted in the late 1800’s and now latex gloves have been banished at Hopkins.

You might be wondering why?

According to the chief of surgery at the institution, over the years, there have been an increased number of people with latex allergies, and some have major allergic reactions to the latex. It can get worse…once they get a reaction, they’re allergic to latex in a wide variety of locations.

The Hopkins officials are using gloves that work just as well but are not allergenic. Many other healthcare facilities are considering following suit.
