Dr. Brian McDonough on Latex Allergies

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- It is not uncommon for doctors to treat patients with latex allergy, although it often takes people suffering from the conditions months to figure out they have it.

Latex allergy is actually a relatively new phenomenon. We did not see much of it 20-to25 years ago. But in recent years, we are finding latex allergy is more common, perhaps because latex is more present.

We see it in more situations, and we deal with it in many medical products and non-products alike. Latex allergy can be dealt, with but one of the big concerns is when there is powder, for instance, in gloves. That can actually cause problems with allergies as well.

This is where it can be tough to detect it, the powder can come in contact with the allergy sufferer and it’s not as easy to figure out just want the problem is.
