Legendary Roxy Could Re-Open By Year's End

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- The Roxy shut down more than a year ago, and there were rumors that the legendary New York City night club could be converted into high-end condos.

But now there are reports that the club is gearing up to re-open. The club's owners will go before the licenses and permits committee of Manhattan's Community Board 4 Tuesday as part of a plan to re-open before the end of the year.

The Roxy was a three-decade staple for Chelsea clubgoers.

The building was built in the 1920's and served for years as a storage warehouse for trucks.

In 1979, it was converted into a roller rink. It became a dance club in the 1980s and hosted some of the early performances of Afrika Bombaattaa. Madonna, Cher and Beyonce are some of the stars who would stop by for impromptu concerts.

The club, however, became known for underage drinking, noise complaints and fights after hours. The club was sold last year to a developer, but apparently the deal fell through.
