Long Island Soldier Killed in Iraq Is Laid to Rest

NEW YORK (AP)  -- A Long Island soldier killed in a crash in Iraq has been laid to rest.

The funeral for 25-year-old Army soldier Andre Darnell Mitchell was held Tuesday at the Greater Allen African Methodist Episcopal Cathedral in Queens. Mitchell was buried in Calverton National Cemetery in Suffolk County.

He was killed July 31 when the Humvee he was riding in overturned on a sharp curve in Mosul, Iraq.

Brigadier Gen. Todd T. Semonite called Mitchell ``an American hero'' for his service.

The general presented the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service to Mitchell posthumously. Mitchell's mother, Yasmin Patterson, accepted the award.

Mitchell was deployed to Iraq in November.
