Death of Queens Toddler Ruled a Homicide

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP)  -- A toddler recently reunited with his mother after being in foster care for most of his life, was found dead in his Queens home on Monday.

Carol D'Auria reports

On Wednesday, the city Medical Examiner ruled 2 1/2-year-old Jashya Brown's death a homicide, saying the toddler died of battered child syndrome and had internal and external injuries.

Jaysha was found unconscious Monday by police responding to a call from his mother Sherrie Brown, who said he had been wrestling with his 5-year-old brother.

Jashya was taken to St. John's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators are trying to determine if he was the victim of his mother, her boyfriend or his 5-year-old brother.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Administration for Children's Services said it is investigating the case and "the facts surrounding it." The ACS statement said a preliminary review of the records show that the family was seen by foster agency caseworkers as recently as Aug. 13, and no problems were found.

Jashya had been reunited with his mother in July after she underwent counseling and took a parenting class.

Brown and her live-in boyfriend were questioned by police and released. So far no arrests have been made.
