NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced the winners of their Music Under New York program, which provides commuters with a little more to listen to other than screeching brakes and garbled platform announcements.

The 23 acts were chosen out of nearly 55 performers who auditioned for the subway gigs on May 1. The acts were judged on quality, variety and appropriateness for the mass transit environment.

The chosen groups don't get a monetary prize but choice gigs at busy platforms.

The 21st Annual Music Under New York auditions saw performances ranging from bagpipe to kora, violin to accordion, bottle-neck guitar to piano with ensembles spanning the world from Africa to Europe, Asia and Latin America.

Various styles included folk, country, blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, old-time rock and roll, guitarists, singer/songwriters and female a cappella.
