NEW YORK (AP)  -- A 32-year-old man has died during the New York City triathlon. It's the first death in the event's eight-year history.

Race director Bill Burke says other competitors alerted medical personnel during the 1,500-meter swim in the Hudson River on Sunday morning and the man was unconscious when he was pulled from the water. Burke says it's a tragedy for the event.

The man's family is in Argentina and hasn't been contacted.

A spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office says an autopsy will take place Monday.

About 3,000 competitors participated in the triathlon, which consisted of the swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride along the Henry Hudson Parkway and a 10-kilometer run in Central Park.

Australians Greg Bennett and Liz Blatchford were the winners.
