NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Brooklyn man who tried to exit a stopped elevator died after falling five stories down a freight elevator shaft early Sunday morning in an artist loft building in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, police said.
Sonia Rincon reports
Jerry Fuchs, 34, a drummer well known in New York City music circles, was at the building for a party.
He and a friend took the freight elevator to the seventh floor but jumped out when the elevator car stopped at the fifth floor, witnesses said.
Fuchs was found unconscious and unresponsive by emergency responders on ground level. He was pronounced dead a little while later at Bellevue Hospital Center.
The other man made the leap safely and wasn't injured, witnesses said.
Fuchs was a member of the rock band Maserati, which formed in Athens, Georgia, but was based in Brooklyn. He also played with a number of other bands around New York City including !!!, Holy Ghost, Turing Machine and The John MacLean.

Buildings Department investigators found nothing mechanically wrong with the elevator and police didn't suspect foul play.
Residents say the freight elevator isn't supposed to be used unless an attendant is on duty, which wasn't the case at the time of the accident.
The Medical Examiner was investigating.
