Man Dies after Plummeting into Trash Compactor

NEW YORK (AP)  -- Police say a man who dashed past security guards at an upscale midtown Manhattan apartment building has died in an apparently accidental plunge into its trash compactor.

Police say the 34-year-old ran into the apartment tower, a few blocks west of the Empire State Building, shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday. He took an elevator to its 36th-floor roof level.

Police say he then apparently fell or accidentally jumped into a chute leading from the 35th floor to the garbage compactor 28 stories below. He was found dead inside it.
