DIX HILLS, N.Y. (AP)  -- A man has been struck and killed by a vehicle on the Long Island Expressway.

Suffolk County police say the victim was hit on the eastbound side of the expressway near exit 51 around 3:15 a.m. Sunday after he walked into traffic.

Investigators say it's unclear why the victim entered the expressway.

The driver told police he swerved to try to avoid hitting the victim but struck him anyway.

Authorities are trying to identify the victim, who wasn't carrying any identification.
