|
NEW YORK (AP) -- A New York City man changing a flat tire by the side of the Long Island Expressway has died after he was struck by a passing car.
The accident occurred at 12:49 p.m. Tuesday near Exit 62 and closed the eastbound LIE for about three hours. The roadway reopened at about 3:45 p.m.
Suffolk County police say 30-year-old Asif Ali, of Richmond Hill, Queens, was driving eastbound on the LIE when he had a flat tire. As he was changing the tire on the shoulder, police say he was struck by driver Erin Maynard, of Farmingville, who was driving a car in the right lane.
No criminal behavior is suspected.
Ali was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
