Man's Death in Haverstraw Police Custody under Scrutiny

HAVERSTRAW, N.Y. (AP)  -- Authorities are investigating the death of a man who was in police custody in Haverstraw.

A county medical examiner planned to perform an autopsy of the 42-year-old Spring Valley man on Sunday.

Haverstraw village police are withholding the man's name pending notification of his family. The man was arrested Saturday on a misdemeanor charge of criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Haverstraw Police Lt. John Hickey says the man was being fingerprinted at police headquarters when he appeared to have a seizure. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe says an initial review indicates no wrongdoing by police.
