Manhattan Doctors Try to Fix Boy's Swollen Hand

NEW YORK (AP)  --  A 10-year-old boy who suffers horrible pain caused by a massive growth in his hand may soon get relief courtesy of a New York City medical team.

Rohit Bachani has been forced to walk around for years with his left arm raised above his head because of the nearly 9 pounds of excess tissue. The growth is caused by a rare condition known as congenital vascular malformation.

A medical team led by Dr. Robert Rosen plans to perform a final surgery at Roosevelt Hospital on Wednesday to reduce the growth's size. Rosen has already injected a special foam into Rohit's arm to shrink the lump.

The Pakistani-born boy's parents had long sought treatment for their son. They had been told one of the only solutions was to amputate his arm.
