NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Good news - and a sharp turnaround - for John McCain.
A new Reuters/Zogby poll has the Republican hopeful with a 5-point lead on Democrat Barack Obama in the presidential race.
McCain leads Obama among likely U.S. voters 46 percent to 41 percent. Obama had been ahead in the poll since after the primaries and lead by 7 points as recently as last month.
The reversal follows a month of McCain questioning Obama's experience and his opposition to most offshore oil drilling.
"There is no doubt the campaign to discredit Obama is paying off for McCain right now," pollster John Zogby told Reuters. "This is a significant ebb for Obama."
Voters also see McCain as a strong manager of the economy, an issue nearly half of them said was their top concern in the election.
