Most of the swimmers who were lost at sea last week washed up close to where they went in. Things don't travel in the ocean as far as we would think. It's probably a decomposed dog that was swimming on the Jersey Shore.

A turtle's shell is part of its skin, meaning the soft skin is directly connected to the hard shell in a similar way that your nails are attached to your fingers. You can't separate a turtle shell from the rest of it without exposing its internal organs. You people watch too many cartoons where you see turtles jump out of their shells. Turtles also don't have teeth. This is a dog with the flesh around it's snout gone, exposing the jaw bones and teeth, which now resembles a beak.

This is a skinned Raccoon, with part of it's jaw removed. Probably tossed in the ocean by local kids, or it ran into a riptide, drowned and was skinned by fish and washed back up

This definitely a very rare animal called a "turkey goon"..They are shy around humans and will squawk at you for just minding your own business. they reside in swampy areas, around the bay, and sometimes live to 60 years old !!

Its called a Plataweisel. They are warm blooded but lay eggs and have a pouch for their young. They are herbivors and consume mainly sea kelp which they tear from sea beds with thier beaks. They can hold mtheir breath for 3-4 minutes. When they are alive they have a purplish hue due to their thin skin and warm blood. I have never eaten one but makos love them. They are native to Greenland and were introduced to North America in 1884 By the explorer Ernest Shackleton. They are only two in captivity at the New York Aquarium in Coney Island. They are not aggressive but carry bacteria under their claws which can cause infection and will attack if threatened. They are nocturnal and often mistaked for raccoons and that is why they are so rarely observed.

Doesn't say much for the SUNY system when the Prof makes uneducated statement of "looks like a dog or coyote that was diseased and in the water too long." I am not an "expert" but anyone with High school Bio could tell you that this is NOT a DOG (nor a Coyote). What I would like to know is where the remains are being held and if anyone is doing an autopsy on it. The Plum Island connection is looking good.

It looks like a hybrid animal of some kind. There is some kind of animal research center on an island off Montauk. They also do all sorts of weird stuff at Brookhaven laboratory, too. Then again, it's probably just a partially decomposed dog.
