N.Y. Philharmonic Axes Governors Island Concert

NEW YORK (AP)  -- The New York Philharmonic has canceled its first-ever concert on Governors Island because of bad weather.

Saturday's free concert won't be rescheduled. It was to have been the orchestra's first outing to the former military base in New York Harbor.

With a chance of thunderstorms in the forecast for Saturday evening, the Philharmonic says it's concerned about the safety of the audience and musicians.

The Philharmonic is planning concerts in several city parks this summer.

Governors Island is a half-mile off lower Manhattan. The city and state are working to transform much of the island into a lush park with an amphitheater and other amenities.
