NJ Shore Diver Dies Despite Boaters' Rescue Attempt

MANASQUAN, N.J. (AP)  -- A diver pulled unconscious from the ocean off central New Jersey has died despite efforts by Good Samaritan boaters to revive her.

The Coast Guard says it was contacted by a crew member from the vessel Blue Fathom around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday. The crew member reported that Helen Kosthaz, a 40-year-old Jamesburg resident who had been diving from the boat about four miles off Manasquan, had been pulled from the water by people aboard another boat.

The rescuers performed CPR as they headed toward Manasquan. A Coast Guard boat met up with them, and two Coast Guard members continued CPR.

Once onshore, Kosthaz was taken by ambulance to Ocean Medical Center in Brick, where she was pronounced dead.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
