NEW YORK (AP/ 1010 WINS) -- New York City Council members are reviewing plans by public housing officials to eliminate thousands of housing vouchers for low-income residents.
The council's public housing and general welfare committees scheduled a hearing Tuesday at City Hall.
The Housing Authority announced in December that it must revoke more than 3,000 federally subsidized vouchers known as Section 8.
The vouchers already had been distributed. But housing officials said $58 million in cuts from its Section 8 budget by Congress last spring left them no choice.
Meanwhile, demand for the vouchers has increased.
The committees will discuss how to prevent residents who were counting on the vouchers from becoming homeless.
The Housing Authority gives out about 100,000 vouchers per year.
