NYC Ambulances Head Down to Gulf Coast

NEW YORK (AP)  -- New York City emergency responders are heading for the Gulf Coast as the region faces the prospect of a major hurricane three years after Katrina.

The city Office of Emergency Management says 35 search-and-rescue experts from the city police force, fire department and other agencies are expected to leave Saturday for Alabama. The team is bringing four search dogs.

Citywide Mobile Response Corp. spokesman Isaac Newman says five of his company's ambulances and 15 crew members are expected to arrive Saturday in Louisiana. They left the company's Bronx headquarters early Friday.

Forecasters say Tropical Storm Gustav is likely to strengthen into a major hurricane and strike somewhere between the Florida Panhandle and Texas next week.

The storm moved west of Jamaica on Friday, the third anniversary of Katrina's devastating blow.
