NYC Plans to Cut funding of 21 Day Care Centers

NEW YORK (AP)  -- New York City plans to reduce financial aid to 21 day care centers as part of a cost-cutting effort to plug a massive hole in the budget.

Administration for Children's Services Commissioner John B. Mattingly said Wednesday that if the city doesn't make the cuts now the agency might be ``forced to shut the doors of child care centers throughout the city.''

The agency is looking to reduce spending by $62 million in total. Cuts to the day care center funding would only be part of that effort. Mattingly said that all the centers targeted for reductions had persistent vacancies.

He said programs for school-age children also will be affected by the budget deficit.
