NYPD Says Teen Wounded in Police-Involved Shooting

NEW YORK (AP)  -- Three people were injured in two separate shootings early Friday, including a 19-year-old who was wounded by police after opening fire on them, police said.

Two uniformed officers spotted a teenager with a handgun in Brooklyn's Bushwick neighborhood and ordered him to drop his weapon, police said. The officers were responding to reports of gun shots at about 12:15 a.m.

Police said the teen then fired a 9mm round at one of the officers. The veteran officers returned fire, shooting a total of eight times. The teen was struck once in the torso and was in stable condition.

Police believe the teen shot two other people moments earlier: Sophia Garcia, 43, and Otis Knight, 17. Both were hospitalized in stable condition. Garcia was shot in the chest and Knight was hit in the right leg.

Police said the woman was an innocent bystander while the boy was the target. Police believe the shooting was the result of a dispute between the two teens.
