New New York Mortage Fraud Unit Opens More than 80 Cases

NEW YORK (AP)  -- The case of a man accused of posing as his dead mother to collect her Social Security is one of dozens cracked by a new investigative team.

Juliet Papa reports

The mortgage and real estate fraud unit has opened more than 80 cases since March. They have led to seven indictments so far.

Sen. Charles Schumer and Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes are announced details of the cases on Monday.

The unit is supported with $875,000 in federal funding. It has 10 staffers, including investigators, accountants and attorneys.

Thomas Prusik-Parkin has blamed an impersonator for dressing up as his mom and scamming authorities. He and an alleged accomplice are awaiting trial on larceny and fraud charges.
