Off-Duty FDNY Firefighter Performs L.I. Highway Rescue

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- An off-duty New York City firefighter rescued a man trapped inside a burning vehicle early Tuesday morning, fire officials said.

Firefighter Edward Bohan, of Engine 44 in Manhattan, was traveling eastbound on the Grand Central Parkway and Northern State Parkway near New Hyde Park on his way to play golf at about 4:45 a.m., fire officials said.

He came upon a sports utility vehicle engulfed in flames, fire officials said. The vehicle had crashed into the woods on the side of the road, officials said.

Bohan, a six-year New York firefighter, saw the victim inside the car being burned by the flames and possibly with a broken arm from the impact of the crash, officials said. The victim could not get his seat belt off or the car door open, officials said.

Officials said the victim pleaded "please don't let me burn alive."

Officials said he used a nearby highway mile marker to shatter a window before pulling the victim to safety just before the car was overtaken by flames.

The victim and Bohan were taken to an area hospital, and Bohan suffers from burns and cuts on his hands and elbows.

Bohan is a past recipient of a FDNY Burn Center Medal, fire officials said.

He and fellow members of Engine 44 received the award for their actions on Oct. 11, 2006 in fighting the fire resulting from the plane crash of Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle into a Manhattan building, officials said.
